 What is Legacy About?

...God, the Gospel, Missions, Muslims, and You.

This conference is for "regular people" like you and me, not just missionaries or missions professionals.  It is meant to inform, inspire and challenge you in your faith, especially in relation to the heart of God for Muslims, in America and around the world. We want to teach you biblical priniciples on wisely and lovingly relating the gospel to Muslim people around you, and the skills to do that. But Legacy is also about thinking.  Thinking biblically.  Thinking intelligently.  Thinking lovingly.

Legacy is about the heart and the mind of the believer.  We want to stimulate and celebrate sound thinking about God as he is revealed in His Son Jesus (2 Cor. 4:6); about His passion to fill the earth with his glory (Hab. 2:14); and about his master plan to gather the nations to Himself, bringing all things under Christ (Eph 1:7-10).

Sound Missiology

Legacy is about sound theology in missions—What's known as "missiology"—especially in missions to Muslims; about redemption, evangelism, and the Great Commission to "make disciples of all nations...baptising and  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded" (Jesus, Matthew 28:18,20).  Legacy is also about understanding Islam and Muslims, and learning to interact with them the way Jesus interacted with Samaritans. Whether you know very little or you are already well-studied, these are essential principals for cross-cultural evangelism.  All these things are part of the writings of Dr. Samuel Zwemer whose legacy we honor.

What you will not find at this conference is a spirit of fear or alarmism or hostility toward Muslims.  Yes, Islam is making inroads into American culture, and we should be aware of this.  But there are many other forces already far more entrenched in American culture.  So our concerns must have biblical perpsective and we must not be gripped by fear.  God is sovereign over the nations and the peoples of the earth (Acts 17:26-27). It is our prayer that this conference will fuel passionate and loving evangelism to Muslim people whom He loves and whom we are also commanded to love, here and abroad.  Therefore, it is also a call to prayer.

More About the Character of Legacy

God loves Muslim people and so do we! Through Jesus Christ God has been redeeming a people from every tribe, tongue and nation.  Christ has given that commission to us…to make disciples off all nations through the power of the gospel.  Indeed, the gospel is the central theme of the Bible.  Today it has been believed and received among all people groups, even among Muslims.  But as a whole Muslims are still very resistant to the message.

However, upheavals in the Muslim world give evidence that a great day of salvation is coming among millions of Muslims throughout the world!

Revelation 11:15-17...The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever. And the 24 elders, who were seated on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshipped God, saying; “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the one who is and was because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign.”

God's greatest passions are His love for His Son and His desire to bring all things under His Lordship for His glory (Rev. 7:9).  He has given His people a holy calling to be heralds of His glorious gospel, even to Muslims.

The Legacy Conference purposes to enjoin, envision and equip believers for the great completion of Christ’s commission, the coming to faith of millions of Muslim people across the globe and across the street.

  • Enjoined to the passion of God for his glory…. that Muslim peoples should be liberated from the bondage of Islam and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
  • Envisioned to a faithful and powerful Biblical worldview, to discern our times as part of the cosmic conflict that Christ won over Satan at the cross.
  • Equipped for a lifestyle of fruitful evangelism and discipleship of Muslim peoples across the globe and across the street.

The Biblical and Historical Foundation of Legacy

Legacy builds on the faithfulness of the great cloud of witnesses that have given their lives to bringing the gospel to Muslim peoples. Foremost among these pioneer missionaries was Samuel Zwemer (1867-1952), The Apostle to Islam”.  A prolific writer, theologian, and strategist, he embodied many deep qualities of the inner spiritual life that are essential for missions.  With James Cantine he formed the Arabian Mission on the prayer of Abraham for his first son, Ishmael, whom Muslims claim as their forefather: “Oh that Ishmael might live before thee” (Genesis 17:18). Zwemer and other great pioneers laid a firm foundation of apologetics, Islamic cultural studies, biblically sound methodologies and a reliance on the power and sovereignty of the Lord to save Muslims.

Samuel Zwemer's Passion for "the Impossible Task"

Zwemer's deepest passion was for God and for the "impossible" task of winning Muslims for Christ.  This conference seeks to honor, capture and communicate that

same passion today!  It's our desire to exalt Christ and the works of God in the world through the "lens" of Zwemer's life and ministry to Muslims.  We also want to stimulate "pioneer thinking" among believers and mobilize students for missions and evangelism to Muslims.  Finally, we want to address the serious challenges that Islam presents to the Church today. Legacy purposes to challenge believers to engage Muslims biblically, lovingly and intelligently.

At Legacy we want to fuel your passion and equip you for these and all things that God cares about.  We also want to promote a sound theological framework for making sense of Islam in the world, with solid biblical principles for interacting with lost Muslim people.  So Legacy is about doing ministry, but also about thinking biblically.

The Ideal Setting for a Conference Like This

Most mission conferences do not allow for actual engagement with the unreached peoples. The Legacy conference is held among Muslim people in Dearborn, Michigan. Often called the Islamic Cultural center of America, Dearborn affords the largest concentration of Arabic-speaking people in the West. Legacy is held in conjunction with the Arab International Festival, the largest one on the continent. Conference activities incorporate festival outreach and cultural immersion through various local ministries. The festival provides real opportunities to interact with Muslim people, share your faith with them, and to move beyond mere stereotypes. We believe you will personally experience the “power of God to save” (Rom. 1:16) and gain confidence for a lifetime of sharing the gospel with Muslims people.

Immerse yourself in one of America's most fascinating multi-ethnic communities. Come and allow our Holy God to inform and transform you, deepen and enrich your spirit, shape your mind and attitudes, and give you a heart to reach Muslim people with the love of Christ and the gospel.   Come to Legacy 2012.
